Finding Comfort in Creativity: How Art and My Dogs Help Me Through Difficult Times

Lately, life has been challenging. With my partner in the hospital, stress and worry have taken their toll on my health—chronic fatigue, aching joints, and the heavy weight of exhaustion pressing down on me. But in these moments, I’ve found comfort in two simple things: my art and my dogs.
Each evening, no matter how drained I feel, I take ten minutes to sketch. Sometimes it’s just a small doodle, a mindless swirl of lines, or a quick animal study. Other times, it turns into something more—a little window into my emotions. The act of drawing, even for a short time, gives my mind a break. It’s a moment to breathe, to focus on something other than the worries circling my thoughts.
And then there’s the warmth of Bailey and Zeus, always by my side. They don’t ask questions, don’t expect explanations. They just know. Snuggling up with them, feeling their steady breath, and soaking in their unconditional love reminds me that I’m not alone. Their presence is grounding, a source of quiet, healing energy.

As difficult as things have been, I’m looking forward to the time when I can return to my drawing board for longer stretches. My struggles aren’t roadblocks; they’re opportunities—fuel for new ideas, new paintings. Every emotion, whether joy or sorrow, has a place in my art. Creativity isn’t just about making something beautiful; it’s about expression, release, and finding meaning in the chaos.
For now, I’ll keep sketching. Keep holding onto those small moments of peace. Because even in the hardest times, art and love have a way of carrying us through.
