Balancing Creativity and Wellness: Navigating the Artistic Journey with Health Challenges

The start of this year has been anything but easy. Life has thrown some big changes my way, and I’ve had to learn how to adapt. My partner was recently diagnosed with diabetes, which has meant a shift in our lifestyle—more mindful eating, regular blood sugar checks, and a whole new way of thinking about food. (Bonus points to anyone with a great diabetic-friendly recipe—seriously, send them my way!)
At the same time, my own health has been a challenge. Over the past six months, my spasms have been getting worse, making it difficult to draw with fine detail. When your body decides to do its own thing, holding a pencil steady can feel impossible. But I refuse to let it stop me from creating. Instead, I’m learning to work with my body, rather than against it.
Adapting as an Artist with Health Challenges
Being an artist with physical limitations means constantly adjusting. Some days, I can focus on detailed work, carefully layering colors and bringing my vision to life. Other days, I have to let go of control, allowing the spasms to dictate the movement. On those days, I turn to abstract painting, letting the energy flow freely onto the canvas. Instead of resisting, I embrace the unpredictability. And honestly? Some of my most expressive pieces come from those moments of surrender.
The key, I’ve learned, is balance. Pushing myself too hard only leads to frustration and exhaustion. So, I take things day by day. When my body says, not today, I listen. And when I have the energy, I make the most of it. Creativity is about adaptation, after all.
Finding Peace in Animals
One thing that never fails to ground me is my love for animals. Spending time with them, observing their natural rhythms, and simply being in their presence calms my mind like nothing else. Today, Frankie is looking much better with his extra layers to keep warm, and that makes me happy. There’s something deeply comforting about caring for animals—they remind me to stay present, to slow down, and to appreciate the small moments.
Between art and animals, I feel like I’ve found my place. Even on difficult days, I know I have these two constants in my life to keep me going.
Moving Forward with Creativity and Compassion
Living with a partner who has diabetes has taught me patience and adaptability in new ways. Just like with my own health, there’s no "one-size-fits-all" approach—some days are easier than others, and some require a bit more effort to manage. But we figure it out together, one step at a time.
And as for my art? I’ll keep creating, whether it’s with careful precision or wild, expressive strokes. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about perfection—it’s about the process, the expression, and the joy of simply making something.
If you’re an artist living with health challenges, or if you’re adapting to life changes like I am, know that you’re not alone. We’re all just figuring it out as we go. And if you have any diabetic-friendly recipes, send them my way!
Until next time, stay creative and stay kind to yourself. 💛
