Frankie’s Got Two Eyes… and I’ve Got a Hoard of Art Supplies

There comes a moment in every artist’s journey when a drawing finally starts to take shape, and today, that moment has arrived for Frankie. He no longer looks like a one-eyed mystery—he’s officially got both eyes, and I’m pretty pleased with how he’s coming along. Soon, I’ll be adding more depth and detail, but for now, I’m just celebrating the fact that he no longer resembles an extra from a sci-fi movie. Progress!

But let’s talk about something just as important as making art: buying art supplies.

Am I an Art Supply Hoarder?

Today, I somehow managed to acquire more. Not that I needed them, of course. But there’s something about the smell of fresh paper, the smooth glide of a brand-new pencil, and the vibrant possibilities of untouched paints that fills me with sheer, unadulterated joy. The logical side of my brain says, "You have plenty." The artist in me says, "But these ones are different!" And so, another set of supplies joins my ever-growing hoard.

The funny thing is, some of these treasures may never actually be used. Oh no, some are far too precious for that! They sit proudly in my collection, admired but untouched, like rare artifacts in a museum of ‘Things Too Nice to Ruin.’ Those beautiful watercolor pans? Still pristine. That expensive handmade paper? Waiting for the ‘perfect’ project (which, let’s be honest, may never come). Those stunning colored pencils in a box so fancy it feels like a crime to sharpen them? Yep, still intact.

And yet, as much as I love collecting supplies, there’s also something magical about actually using them. The first mark on a fresh page, the unexpected way two colors blend, the happy accidents that lead to new techniques—it’s all part of the adventure. I remind myself that these materials aren’t just for admiring; they’re meant to be experimented with, enjoyed, and, yes, even ‘wasted’ in the name of creativity. I am not an art supply hoarder, I am simply prepared to make beautiful art.
